The Claverton Pumping Station is a rare surviving example of the technology of the Late Georgian – Regency – period. The pump started work in 1813 and uses the power of the River Avon to lift water up 48ft into the Kennet and Avon Canal above.

Alongside the pumping station, a cottage was built specifically for the engine keeper and his family to live in. From 1813 until 1953 each of the four engine keepers lived in this cottage while they maintained the pumping station.

The Canal & River Trust have decided to sell the Engineman’s Cottage.

The volunteers who restored and maintain the pumping station would like to retain the cottage, have plans for its use and are campaigning to change CRT’s mind.
