Our guest speaker this year is Gary Armstrong Trustee of the North Essex Heritage Trust
The multi-million pound restoration of Colchester’s historic “Jumbo” water tower is underway to transform the vacant landmark into an accessible public heritage and events space.
Built in 1883, standing 40m tall, constructed from 1.25 million bricks and 142 tonnes of cast iron, holding 1,140 tonnes of water at its peak.
It is the largest surviving Victorian municipal water tower in Britain; decommissioned in 1984 and listed as a Grade II* historic building. It has spent decades on Historic England’s Heritage at Risk Register.
