Wiltshire Museum, Devizes – Industrial Archaeology Conference

The theme for the 2021 conference is Building Materials.

Programme: This has been changed slightly to the one previously advertised (March 2021). There may be further changes.

09.30 Registration and Welcome

10.05 Building Georgian Chippenham – architects, builders and materials, by Mike Stone. (Topic changed).

10.50 Coffee break

11.10 Digging Bath stone – a quarry transport history, by Doug Roseaman. A talk based on the late David Pollard’s definitive work.

12.00 Sarsen stone for building, by Katy Whitaker. Results of recent fieldwork in the north Wiltshire sarsen stone quarry throw new light on extraction and use for building materials, street furniture, and roadstone.

12.50 LUNCH (not provided). There are many places in Devizes to have lunch, or bring a packed lunch with you. If the weather is fine Hillworth Park is just a short walk away.

14.15 Hills Quarry Products Ltd, by Peter Andrews. Hills currently operate 8 quarries (producing sand, gravel and a variety of sands for asphalt, building, concrete, agriculture and construction) as well as 5 concrete plants, 3 bagging plants 5 inert tipping facilities and a railhead providing a variety of limestone products for the construction sector. They currently operate 3 quarries in the Cotswold Waterpark and have been quarrying sand and gravel in this area for over 100 years. Hills aim to provide an insight into how this industry has developed over the years and how the processes have evolved over time.
