Suffolk IAS – Underfall Yard, Bristol
March 3 @ 19:30 - 20:30 GMT
Ipswich Maritime Trust are hosting a Zoom talk with a speaker from the Underfall Yard Trust and have generously invited SIAS members to participate.
Members of SIAS are familiar with the Ipswich Wet Dock, constructed in 1842 to allow ships to remain afloat at all states of the tide.
In Bristol, on the other side of the country, a similar dock, known as the Floating Harbour, had been created some 30 years earlier by diverting the course of the River Avon along a newly-created channel, also known as the New Cut. Some river water flowed through the Floating Harbour, controlled by the Overfall Sluice at the upper end and the Underfall at the lower. Adjacent to the lower sluice is the Underfall Yard, which was crucial to the operation and maintenance of the Floating Harbour.
If you would like to join in, please email suffolkiasoc@gmail.com by Sunday 28th February. You will be sent an invitation with a link to join in the Zoom session.
